Beth's Summer Tunes

I love how the summer brings about cheery pop anthems that get stuck in your head... for the whole of July I had "Battlefield" in my head and on my spotify, and then Black Eyed Peas moved in with "I gotta feeling", and Kelly Rowland lent some vocals to "When love takes over" and there you've got some summer feel-good tunes! But my current fave has got to be "Never leave you" by Tinchy Stryder and Amelle from the Sugababes, so much so that it kept me up at the weekend for about 2 hours just going around and around in my head.
Which got me thinking....
So many songs that we listen to have no real meaning, or are just bland "love" songs about how they feel about whoever the guy or girl they're currently dating, just for that to change completely by the next single. In fact, listening to the current chart, I now know how to "evacuate the dancefloor" after going "bonkers" before getting "love CPR" from JLS... and still, after months of analysis, I haven't a clue what Lady Gaga is on about most of the time!! SO many of the lyrics we listen to are about nothing much, or about this idea of love being so disposable that we can exchange the guy in the song for the next one who comes along with ease.
Now don't get me wrong, I really like a lot of these songs and they've had me dancing away this summer, but the thing I like about this Tinchy Stryder track is that these lyrics are a bit different... it's all about staying with someone, about commitment and faithfulness- and we don't see that too much in the media or sadly in our own lives sometimes.
I remember going out with a guy when I was a teenager and thinking everything was perfect, only to find out that he'd been chatting up a girl behind my back- and I felt so gutted. I struggled for years after to really trust guys in relationships because I was always scared that they'd find someone better or that they'd just leave one day. But the amazing thing about being a Christian is now I really know that God promises that he will never leave me, that his love will never run out- a bit like what Amelle and Tinchy are singing about this summer! We spend too much time looking for love and acceptance in relationships, when God who IS love is promising love us forever, to never leave us no matter how hard it gets... somehow in the light of that, trying to find the right guy or getting love in relationships doesn't seem as important! So this summer I'm going to sing loudly to my radio with Tinchy knowing that God will never ever leave me, and that no matter what I do, that he will still love me forever!!
